Before Surgery

-The Preoperative Admission Specialize will be calling you preoperatively to discuss your preparation for surgery, instruct you about your arrival time and obtain a brief health history. She will also answer any of your questions or concerns you may have at this time.

-Some patients may require testing before surgery. This may include blood test, electrocardiogram or chest X-ray. If needed, these will be ordered by your surgeon and completed several days prior to your operation

-Adults having a General/Monitored Anesthetic may eat a light snack before 10:00pm. Do not eat any solid food 8 hours prior to your scheduled surgery time. You may drink clear liquids 3 hours before your scheduled surgery time; this includes water, black coffee, clear juices, tea, and clear soda. DO NOT smoke, chew gum, or eat candy or mints. You may brush your teeth or rinse your mouth on the morning of surgery, taking care not to swallow any water.

-Please refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages or smoking the night before, as well as the day of your procedure.

-Your doctor’s office will provide you with specific instructions for pediatric patients.

-If you are having a local anesthetic only, you may eat and drink normally.

-Instructions about taking your routine medications will be provided by your doctor’s office or the surgery center.

-If you are to receive sedation or a general/monitored anesthetic, it is your responsibility to arrange, in advance, for a responsible adult to drive you home and remain with you for the first 24 hours following surgery.

-Please notify your surgeon before coming to the Center if there is any change in your physical condition such as a cough, cold, fever or other indications of illness.
